If you don't know anything about SEO, then you don't really have to look too hard to learn about it. In fact it's pretty easy to learn about SEO today. It's very easy to find lots of informative articles and videos out there when it comes to learning SEO. You can read SEO blogs and articles, watch videos and listen to podcasts, from websites and people and experts who specialise in SEO.
You can quite quickly learn the basic most important fundemental things about SEO today from all of it. Doing these things will boost your knowledge and skills in SEO and improve your own SEO techniques, methods and strategies which you can use on your own website. But before you go out and start doing that, let's teach you some basic fundemantal techniques that every webmaster today should know!
1: Have Patience and Stay Committed
SEO doesn't happen overnight. Not in the real world. You can't just build a bunch of backlinks to your webpage or run some kind of SEO package on it and expect to wake up in the morning to find your site on the 1st page of Google. SEO takes time and requires patience and staying commited to it. SEO is never usually a one-time thing. It requires constant doing, redoing, updating and the results only happen after time. Usually you can expect to see results from your SEO after a week or so depending on what was done exactly. Otherwise you might need to wait longer. And keep doing it. Sometimes this can take months and even years before it all finally starts paying off. That is why you should be patient but always stay commited. Never give up on your dreams. Never!
2: Ask Questions and Learn as You Go
If you're starting out doing SEO for yourself, you're inevetibly going to be wondering about things. Don't be afraid to ask questions. In fact I encourage it! If you're going to be hiring an SEO company to do your SEO for you, be sure to ask them lots of questions regarding their own methods, strategies and techniques that they use. Get them to be specific about what it is they're actually going to be doing for you and you'll be able to learn from this yourself too.
3: Make Your Site SEO Friendly
It kind of goes without saying really. But for those in the back or not in the know. But you need to make sure that your website is as SEO friendly as it can be. What do I mean by this? It means making sure that things like your site has no broken images, all images have alt tags in them. That there's no broken code and things like making sure that your site has all the neccessary bells and whistles that Google requires a website to have today. This could be such things as making sure it has SSL. And you have a sitemap and robots file and such things. You can find and do a free SEO appraisal in Google which will tell you a lot of things about your site that you can work on to improve to make your site even more SEO friendly!
4: Make Proper Use of Your Keywords
It's a very commendable practice to make sure that you add the keywords that you're targeting in things like your page and post titles, the images, actually in the web pages if you are to have a very well optimized website for your keywords. You can perform keyword research on it which will show you if you're using the keywords on it that people are actually searching for to find your site. Look up keyword research tools in Google and you'll find plenty of them both free and paid. Neil Patel's free keyword research tool Uber Suggest is free and very good for doing keyword research so make use of it if you can.
5: Only Ever Use Unique Fresh Content
If you can help it, and you should be able to, never use duplicate copy/paste content on your site. Google doesn't punish you for it. But it wont rank that content higher in the SERPs than the ones that it found it to have it on originally. You can outrank duplicate content but it's hard going and can require a lot of SEO. However the best thing to do hands down is to just use fresh original content every time. Because this way Google will rank you higher for that content than anyone else that copy/pastes it from your site. Fresh content is highly regarded and appreciated by people and Google alike. Just remember to always write for people though and not for the search engines.
6: Make Full Use of Social Media
If you're not using social media for your website to pull in potential clients and customers then you're basically just leaving money on the table for your competitors. Social media can be a great tool for pulling in more traffic and customers to your site and business. It can create more awareness of your website and business online. So make full use of sites and platforms like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Pinterest, Reddit etc etc.
7: Be Smart in Your Backlink Building
When you are doing backlink building, whether you are building them yourself, or outsourcing it to someone else. Always be smart in the way you do it. What I mean is you only want to build backlinks from sites that are either A) highly related and relevant to your site as much as is possible. Or B) very high authority sites. You can probably find many sites out there in the same niche as yours which you can reach out to and ask if you can guest post for them which gets you a link to your site from the post you've written on their site. And you can find lots of other high authority sites to build backlinks on too like local business directories, social bookmarking site, article sites, video sites and many more. Building high quality, high authority backlinks to your site on a steady and consisten basis, shows Google that your site is popular among people and is a good source of information for them and will rank you higher because of it.
8: Start Blogging!
I can't emphasise this enough, it makes me face palm when I see that a website doesn't have a blog on it. It's such an easy thing to do and comes with many benefits so much so it would be silly to not have a blog on your site today. Having a blog on your site is a super great way to not only pull in extra traffic and visitors from the search engines, but can help you to show how much of an expert you are in your niche industry which people want to see which will install confidence in people to buy and order from your site.
9: Make Use of Video Marketing
Video marketing is essentially just making videos about the things in your niche that your website has or sells. And it's very easy to do today. You can find many websites and apps out there that let you create videos quickly and easily. YouTube is the 3rd most visited website on the Internet today. You can pull in thousands to millions of extra visitors and client to your site by just having some videos up. And YouTube isn't the only video site out there! You can upload your videos to other video sites too which can all help to gain extra traffic back to your site as well as great backlinks too.
10: Consider Hiring SEO Experts and Freelancers
If you don't want to, or can't do the SEO for your website yourself, you can always hire an SEO expert provider or SEO freelancer to do it for you. You can find many great freelancers who all usually have their own services up and running on the MonsterBacklinks.com site which you can order right away. I'll let you in on a secret - even most successful webmasters like myself use and even rely on the SEO services that freelancers on MBL provide to SEO and rank up my site without me having to do any of the work myself.
Final Thoughts
To have a successful website, you'll need to SEO it. SEO is both on-page and off-page. And those successful websites incorporate these SEO practices in their website to garner a spot in the top results of the search engine results pages (SERPS). SEO can be a really helpful thing to learn and do and can have a huge return on investement when it's done properly.
